Ketoconazole shampoo for scalp psoriasis
Ketoconazole is anti-fungal drug that is commonly used for treatment of skin fungal infections. It is not used for treatment of psoriasis because it is auto-immune disorder that is transferred through genes. Ketoconazole is present as an active ingredient in large number of medications along with recipients. It is available as creams, lotions and shampoos.
There are mixed reviews about the use of ketoconazole for psoriasis. Some patients have found it effective because their psoriasis is cleared with ketoconazole containing products. There might be reason that they have misdiagnosed psoriasis with fungal infection of the skin because most of time fungal infections resemble a lot with psoriasis. There is also a chance that their psoriasis get worse due to secondary fungal infection and the use of ketoconazole products have removed fungal infection thus psoriasis symptoms are also minimized.
On the other hand there are some patients whose psoriasis has not responded to ketoconazole products. It means that they are really suffering from psoriasis and ketoconazole have not a tendency to treat or cure psoriasis.
Therefore you should only use ketoconazole cream when it is prescribed by qualified medical professional depending on the nature of your skin infection and its severity. Mostly scalp psoriasis is treated with psoriasis because dandruff and dryness of scalp facilitate fungal and yeast growth that is hard to treat without anti-fungal agents such as ketoconazole.
How Ketoconazole Works
Ketoconazole is anti-fungal agent therefore it works by killing the fungi at the site of psoriasis. If your skin has psoriasis without fungal infection then it will not work and will not show any result therefore you should first confirm the type of infection than apply it. It damages the cell membrane of fungi thus integrity of fungi is disrupted and it is killed.
How Ketoconazole is applied
Ketoconazole is applied topically to the affected skin because there is no proven use of systemic ketoconazole for skin infections. Ketoconzole has significant toxic profile as compared to other anti-fungal agents and it has poor oral absorption therefore it is less considered for oral intake.
Topically it is available as shampoos and creams. Shampoos are very effective for scalp psoriasis. You should wash your hairs with regular shampoo to remove dust and dirt than apply ketoconazole shampoo and leave it for 10 minutes and rinse. You should repeat the use of this shampoo until your symptoms are reduced. It is good to apply it once a week even after your symptoms are cleared because it will prevent the relapse and remains asymptomatic for longer duration.
If you are not suffering from scalp psoriasis than you should clean the skin where you have psoriasis patched. Tap it to dry and apply a thin layer of ketoconazole cream on it and leave. Repeat it twice or thrice a day or as directed by your physician. The duration of treatment can depend on individual’s condition so you should apply it as directed and till when directed.
