Can Antibiotics Treat Psoriasis
Psoriasis is not caused by any bacteria or fungi rather it is disease of immune system. Hyperactivity of immune system increases the skin cells proliferation that results in accumulation of dead skin on skin surface. So antibiotic is not a right choice to treat psoriasis.
There is no well established and effective treatment option for psoriasis however different types of local and systemic medication are used to minimize the symptom of psoriasis to get a temporary relief. Topical products are more effective in reducing the symptoms of psoriasis because systemic products are not considered efficacious.
Antibiotics such as amoxicillin are used to treat infections caused by different microbes therefore it may be helpful in preventing the complication and secondary infection at the site of psoriasis.
Guttate psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis where red patches are formed on the abdomen, back, arms and legs in tear shape pattern. Antibiotics such as amoxicillin could be used in this type of psoriasis because psoriasis is triggered and complicated by tonsillitis or strep infection and antibiotics are used to treat strep infections. Penicillin and erythromycin are also considered effective and efficient options against strep infections to reduce the complications of psoriasis.
There are multiple evidences that are neither supporting the use of antibiotics nor going against it. The efficacy of different psoriasis treatment options among patients is different due to the differences in psoriasis patterns in different people. Therefore few people show better results to topical medication treatment and few show better treatment results against systemic medications such as antibiotics or steroids.
Although psoriasis is not bacterial infection but bacteria may act as key player in its spread and complications so it is necessary to focus on it. Therefore antibiotics are also included in psoriasis treatment options such as amoxicillin because they have positive results among some psoriasis patients.
As it is mentioned that treatment of psoriasis varies from patient to patient therefore you must take a medication either topical or systemic upon consultation with qualified physician because you don’t know what is going on with your skin except your qualified physician.
It is also reported that bacteria have strong connection with psoriasis development along with immune system therefore antibiotics including and excluding amoxicillin can be included in the list not as cure remedy rather medication for choice.
